Vp’s open garden

October 14, 2008 · 9 Comments

It is terrific news that the wonderful and highly original idea vp had to create a virtual open garden blog to raise money for Wateraid has now reached a staggering £1000.

If you haven’t seen her amazing achievement, please check out the links I have highlighted. The new target is £1300-which could pay for a hand-dug well plus handpump to serve 150-200 people in Ghana. Surely something to aim for. And every little donation will help. It’s really easy to give money through Just Giving on the site-a totally secure method of parting with your money

And if you are wondering why I have been absent  for some time-well I haven’t been absent at all. I have working and posting on my other blog most days. I just haven’t linked to it from here. I seem to have spent the summer creating textiles and stitching and continue to do so. I have been gardening and allotmenting and photographing, but just not here. If you want to see some of the most amazing colours nature produces,  I have included several images of Japanese maples doing their thing here. Enjoy.

apples and pears

It seems hard to believe that the lack of any settled summer weather has already lead us to this point in the garden.

I have been harvesting produce from the allotment for some time, and these trees in the garden, although not quite ready yet, are signaling an unwelcome move into a new season. I’m not ready for autumn yet. Where is the summer?

I have been a bit absent from here recently-I’m spending a great deal of time sewing, rather than sowing. And the main purpose of this post is to direct any of you who do not yet know to VP’s “Virtual Garden” blog where she is hoping to raise oodles of money for the charity, WaterAid.

Pop over, have a look around and admire the view and the recipes and the lovely prizes and if you feel inclined, leave her a donation.

steam fair

Last week a fair pitched up in a field not far from our house, and a great deal of advertising appeared around the town for Carter’s Steam Fair. A steam fair, I hear you ask? Not a term I have come across very often, but this was a wonderful old fashioned affair with rides painted brightly in the manner of old fashioned fairs.

In fact, not just in the manner of, but in reality. These were old fashioned rides, many dating back to the early twentienth century and the merry-go-rround was still being powered by a Victorian steam engine. I love merry-go-rounds-I even love the manic expression in the horses’ eyes. These were gorgeously coloured and only lacking long tails to make them perfect. I watched for ages, enjoying the swirl of colours and the classic fairground organ music they galloped to.
